Sustainable access to natural wonders

The Challenge
Waitomo's renowned cave systems required the replacement of three critical access structures to conservation lands: the Blackwater Cavers Exit Bridge, the Cave Viewing Platform at Ruakuri Caves, and the Mangapohue Bridge. Located within protected reserves, each site presented unique challenges. The Blackwater Bridge location demanded helicopter access to protect the surrounding cave system, while the Mangapohue Bridge replacement required working within a limestone gorge with complex safety requirements.

Our Solution
Edifice developed an innovative approach to minimise environmental impact while ensuring structural excellence. We maximised off-site prefabrication wherever possible to reduce on-site construction time and disturbance. Using helicopter lifts, we transported materials and equipment while maintaining a minimal footprint within the reserves. Our team implemented comprehensive safety protocols for height and confined space work, while collaborating closely with DOC and engineering partners to exceed environmental and structural requirements. Environmental protection measures included strategic silt trap placement and thorough site cleanup protocols. The completed structures now provide safe, durable access to these natural landmarks, showcasing our ability to deliver high-quality infrastructure in environmentally sensitive locations.
