The Challenge
A pedestrian access bridge leading from the public street to a Victorian villa in Napier required complete replacement. The original timber structure, measuring 6.7 metres long and 1.2 metres wide, suffered from significant rot in its supporting beams. The steep and narrow access to the site presented logistical challenges for the replacement work.
Our Solution
Edifice developed a prefabrication approach to replace the bridge with a new structure that matched the original aesthetic while ensuring structural integrity. The new bridge, measuring 7.2 metres long and 1.2 metres wide, was constructed using H3.2 treated Glulam beams, posts, handrails and decking, sourced from Techlam. This off-site prefabrication significantly reduced on-site construction time and disruption. The new bridge incorporates the existing aluminium prefabricated gating/slating from the previous bridge, which was recoated in white. The decking was finished in a green/grey colour to complement the house's style and colour, with anti-slip strips. While Edifice handled the prefabrication, Drainways Contracting Ltd managed the on-site lifting/installation. The completed bridge blends nicely with the villa, providing safe and durable access.

“We chose Edifice because we’ve known the company from years ago. We knew they’d do a good job based on previous jobs we’ve seen in the Hawke’s Bay region where we’re based. We were impressed by the quality. Edifice was the first company that came to mind for our project manager. Looking at their website, it fitted the brief and what we needed to complete the job. We reached out and went from there. So it was internal recommendation and past projects.”
